Video and game platform
Overview
Designing for Nick products on the Android platform required finding just the right balance between custom kid-friendly UI and existing Google Design patterns. Injecting moments of surprise and delight during an otherwise utilitarian content platform forced me to take off my "big kid hat" and rethink everything I thought I knew about product design.

UI Design System
When we watch TV, we want to do as little "leaning-in" as possible. Designing a system that made browsing shows, seasons and episodes simple and fluid was key for an optimal viewing experience. A 'Choose Your Faves' feature during onboarding put kids in charge of the content programming. For non-readers, a color story added an additional affordance for recognizing their favorite characters and shows.
Optimizing for kids
Large Touch Targets
Affordances like BIG tap targets help users with underdeveloped dexterity.
Skeuomorphic UI
Buttons that look like real world buttons are recognizable and tempting to touch.
Animated Transitions
Kid users need extra navigational context to get from A to B and back.
